How the pieces move
- Check: your king is under attack. You must save it.
- Checkmate: the king is attacked and cannot escape. Whoever gives checkmate wins!
- Castling: the king moves 2 squares toward a rook, and the rook jumps to the king's other side. Allowed only if neither has moved yet.
- Promotion: a pawn that reaches the far end becomes a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
- En passant: a pawn can capture an enemy pawn that just moved 2 squares past it.
- Draw: no legal moves while not in check (stalemate), not enough pieces to checkmate, or the same position repeats 3 times.
